CUSIP International Numbering System

An extension of the CUSIP system for identifying international securities.

CINS provides unique identifiers for international securities that trade in U.S. and Canadian markets but are issued by entities outside these countries. The system uses the same nine-character alphanumeric format as domestic CUSIPs but with specific alphabetic prefixes to indicate the issuing country or supranational organization. CINS codes are essential for cross-border trading and settlement, enabling international securities to be processed through North American clearing and settlement systems. The system covers foreign government bonds, corporate securities, and other international instruments. CINS codes are also incorporated into ISINs when these securities receive international identification numbers.
